Bookmakers vs Betting Exchanges

Posted on 05 June 2010 by admin

So which one is better and more advantageous for bettor Bookmaker or Betting Exchange? There are advantages and disadvantages for both. At first it may seem like Betting Exchange is far more better than traditional Bookies. But when you research it deeper things are not so good as it may seem at first.

If you’re not familiar with betting exchanges and laying I recommend you to read “Betting Exchanges and Lay Betting

Traditional Bookmakers

Bookies were there long before Betting Exchanges. As you know they offer fixed odds and if bettor likes them he can put a bet. There are many bookmakers out there, so there is good competition between them. Bettor can choose from many different bookies. Many sportsbooks gives you option to bet live. Also you can find bets for many different events for pre-match and live betting. But you can’t put Lay bets as bookmaker is doing this. And odds are usually lower than in betting exchanges and therefore your profits should be lower than using betting exchange.

Advantages

  • Many Different Events to Bet on
  • Good competition between Bookies

Disadvantages

  • Lower odds than in Betting Exchanges
  • No option to Lay

Betting Exchanges

Probably the biggest advantage of Betting Exchanges is option to use Lay bets. With Laying you can win on all other selections but your selected. And therefore this allows trading.  Especially this is good if you’re betting on Horse racing. One of the disadvantages of betting exchanges is that there is only one serious betting exchange – Betfair. There is other betting exchanges too, like BETDAQ, Betsson and other smaller ones, but there is less liquidity and you can bet only on popular events. Even in betfair it’s problematic to bet live on sports such as Ice Hockey, Basketball and others because of low liquidity where bookies mostly accept betting live on such events.

Also positive aspect is that average odds will be higher than in simple bookies. Though if you’re a professional bettor then it’s most likely that you’ll get premium charge and higher odds on betfair will mean little or nothing to you. Also often it’s possible to find higher odds at other bookies, using odd checkers. You can find those online, just type in google – odds checker.

Advantages

  • Higher overall odds
  • Lay betting
  • Trading

Disadvantages

  • Little liquidity in less popular markets(especially in-play)
  • Little competition between exchanges
  • High Premium charge if you’re good

Conclusion

You cannot say definitely which – betting exchanges or bookmakers – are better. First of all it’s different for every bettor and his betting style. If you’re trading horse racing markets, then definitely betting exchange will be the choice. But if you want to bet on some less popular event, for example, your local football league then you’ll search for a bookie which allows it.
